So we know that Galentine’s Day is technically the day before Valentine’s Day, as instigated by Parks & Rec. Still, Galentine’s Day has morphed into a tradition of its own and spills over into Valentine’s day for single (all the single ladies, put your hands up!) and taken women alike. So, if you’re celebrating Galentine’s Day today or you want an excuse to round up the gang soon, we have some simple ideas that is easy to throw together at the last minute to entertain your gals.
For those who do life with your pinkies up—or just really love Downton Abbey—invite your gals over for a bit of afternoon tea (at night). While loose leaf Green, Jasmine, and English teas are what the event is named for (psst: if you’re looking for an infuser, they have a set of three at World Market), it’s all about the spread! For the ultimate menu, these scones and a slew of mini tea sandwiches, like these easy peasy cucumber and chive and prosciutto-asparagus varieties, will totally do the trick. Decor could be as simple as a white tablecloth with a vase or two of carnations. Your gals might even leave talking in a British accent.
Pizza and beer
Hey, we all don’t delight in flowers and tea, right? A fun gals night can be as simple as ordering a pizza and beer and catching up on New Girl. If you’re big on pepperoni or veggie, an IPA is the perfect pair, and for cheese pizza, a pale ale works best. Maybe there’s a better pairing that you and the girls can discover! Have enough time to make a homemade pizza? This homemade crust knocks our socks off.
Because we all have that competitive friend that we need to appease (or maybe we’re the Monica of the group). If you’ve managed to lasso in enough friends, divide into two teams. Have each team bake something that is a bit difficult, such as macaroons, and see which team is the most successful. You can elect someone to judge, act as the judge yourself, or just subjectively decide who’s the ultimate baker. Just don’t go all Gordon Ramsey on your friends.
In your preferred room, set up a station of masks, nail polish, and refreshments (may we recommend this champagne cocktail?). Have your gals treat themselves at each station and then laugh hysterically as they try and take a sip with wet nails and a mask on. Perfect post-treatment movie: Legally Blonde or Princess Diaries.
Blind wine tasting
There's probably nothing that says "modern-day girls-get-together" better than wine. Have each of your girls bring their wine of choice in a brown paper bag with their name written on it on it. To avoid revealing the wine’s identities, have the owner open the wine bottle and pour when it comes time to taste their wine. Once all opened, line up the bottles and go down the line and guess the varietal based off of taste (i.e. Cabernet Sauvignon or Malbec). Provide notepads for your gals to jot down their tasting notes while munching on a stellar cheeseboard. Believe it or not, swiss, brie, and blue are cheeses that pair the best with most wines. Top off the cheeseboard with olives, nuts, and your favorite fruit.
